Many people would love to work from their computer at home and make a living, and finding online editing jobs can be a great start.  There is a lot of work out there for freelance writers that look for it and are willing to work hard stay focused.

The most important thing to remember is that it is not going to be easy.  There is no such thing as a free lunch, and no one is simply going to hand you money for minimal effort.  Freelance writer work is hard that requires a lot of patience and perseverance.  That being said, it is very possible to find work and make a good living writing or editing online.

Many people start by writing or editing web content.  There are a ton of websites out there, with many more being created every day.  Someone has to write all the words that go on those pages!  That is where you can come in.  Many will post their needs on online classified sites such as Craigslist, but many more will not.  Be pro-active.  Search online for any sites that you think may need your expertise.  If a site has shoddy writing, do not be afraid to fire off an email to the webmaster offering your services to clean it up.  These editing jobs are a great way to show your skill and get your feet wet in the world of web content writing, and give you something to show future clients.

Online Editing JobsOf course, it is also important to turn out a quality product.  Do not think that just because it is the internet that no one will care if you have a few typos or grammar errors in your work.  There are few things that will kill your new online writing career faster than ignoring those little details.  Use a word processor (like Microsoft Word) with a spell-check and grammar-check function, and make sure you run everything you write through it.  Do not rely on it to do all the editing though!  Sometimes typos are not picked up by spell checkers if they typo is still a real word.  Always read through your work at least once before considering it finished.

First time writers and editors would do well to stick to topics that they know.  Getting into a writing rhythm and finding your own personal style takes time, and it is easier to do when you are writing about something that you consider yourself an expert on (or close to it).  Furthermore, most freelance writer work online will require some amount of research, so if you make sure it is about a topic you are familiar with, you will not find yourself trying to pull something out of the air.

Once you do find your writing style and start taking on more advanced assignments, research will be part of your daily job.  Make sure you are thorough in your research and accurate in your writing.  Just like how networking can help you find jobs, word of mouth about any inaccurate work you do will get around as well.  It is also wise to remember that there is one thing that can sink your career quicker than grammar and spelling mistakes: plagiarism.  There are programs designed to spot people who are stealing other people’s work, and you will be kicked off an assignment immediately if you are found to be plagiarizing.

Once you have a few articles under your belt, do not be afraid to go back and contact your previous clients.  Networking is by far the best way to find work as a freelance editor.  You will be amazed at how many people know people who know people that need an editor.  Not to mention that if you turned in a quality product, that client will probably find use for you again.

Finding online editing jobs and writing freelance can be extremely rewarding for those that are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to be successful.
