free lance writing jobsThere are several things that beginning writers are not aware of when it comes to free lance writing jobs. This article is directed to the inexperienced beginner who may have dreams of avarice and easy money by just hanging out at home and ‘bleeding over the keyboard.’

The most important illusion to dispel is that there is no ‘real work’ involved in web writing jobs. Every piece of writing which will actually put money in your pocket will require research, which is much easier in the days of Google and much more risky, since the internet can be an unreliable resource. Not only do you have to research, but also at times, you will need to research your research.

In addition, none of that is paid for, of course, except in the final amount. You can spend several hours researching and writing an article that may earn you only a few dollars, and even when you have been at it for years, this will remain true. That is the second illusion to dispel. If you expect to get rich by some easy writing online, it is not likely to happen without having a very specific niche and a marketable name. In other words, if you are, for example, Christopher Hitchens or Stephen King, you can make big bucks taking the free lance writing jobs you choose to take. If you are not, expect to take the jobs you can get.

Is it possible to make enough to survive on just free lancing?

Yes. You can work from home if you can build enough resources and contacts to keep the jobs coming in, but do not expect to make much until you’ve been at it for a while. This means a whole lot of words for not much pay. While a few places  such as some web design or copy writing firms, that charge their customers a lot for the text  can afford to pay their best writers 5 or more cents per word, it is more realistic to expect to get a penny or a fraction of a cent. Do not look down on this, though, because it is still paying work. It just means you have to do more work than you may have expected before you can make that rent payment.

Now, on to the smaller things. One of the skills many wannabe free lancers lack that is essential to the work is the ability to synthesize. This means you can research several things or aspects of a thing, and understand them enough to coherently merge or incorporate information about all of the elements into one cohesive whole. It is something that improves with practice, but the better your synthesis skills are, the more money you will make. Why? Because it severely cuts down your research time, and the time you spend staring at the screen thinking about what to write, when you can easily make connections on the topic for yourself rather than needing to find them elsewhere or figure them out in an involved, deliberate mental process. Not that anyone ends up doing it with no effort whatsoever, but the less time wasted thinking of how to put two ideas together, the more time you spend writing, which is where your bread is buttered.

To put it simply, free lance writing jobs are still jobs. They are, in fact, usually low paying jobs. Writers write because they have to. Free lance writers write free lance because they are writers who need to make money, but they are still writers. If you do not have to write, free lance writing is probably not for you, just as fiction writing would not be for you. Some people have the skill to do it but not the drive to write. These people inevitably move on to some kind of work that is more traditional. However, if you are a writer at heart, and you stick it out past the beginning, you can find yourself making a living writing freelance online. Hopefully on paper, too.
